BC Hydro Achieves Penultimate Milestone with Fifth Generating Unit Online at Site C

July 23, 2025

The Site C project has reached one of its last major milestones with the successful commissioning of the fifth generating unit.

This achievement brings the project one step closer to full completion, with testing and commissioning of the sixth and final generating unit now underway. The sixth unit remains on track to come into operation by this fall.

“Commissioning the fifth generating unit at Site C is a significant step towards securing more clean and affordable electricity for communities, homes and businesses,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “Congratulations to all the workers at Site C on your success achieving this significant milestone.”

Since the first unit came online in October 2024, Site C has steadily advanced toward delivering clean and reliable power to British Columbians. The second unit followed in December, the third in February, and the fourth in late March.

Each generating unit is capable of producing over 180 megawatts of electricity – enough to power more than 80,000 homes.

Once fully operational, Site C will generate enough electricity to power about 500,000 homes – boosting BC Hydro’s total electricity supply by approximately eight per cent.
