Oakville Hydro Participates in Ontario-Wide Project to Help Prepare for Growing EV Adoption

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to grow, Oakville Hydro is participating in a new Ontario-wide project that will help local electricity distributors better understand and manage the impact of EV charging on the electricity grid.

The project, led by BluWave-ai, brings together Oakville Hydro and other Ontario local distribution companies (LDCs) to explore how connected electric vehicles can support a more flexible and efficient electricity system while continuing to deliver safe, reliable service as EV adoption increases.

Ontario currently has approximately 300,000 EVs on the road, with adoption expected to continue growing in the coming years. As more customers make the transition to EVs, LDCs are planning for new patterns of demand, particularly during peak charging periods. 

The initiative builds on previous EV charging management projects that explored how coordinated charging can help reduce localized grid congestion and better manage demand on the electricity system.

For Oakville Hydro, the project provides an opportunity to better understand local EV charging patterns and support future electricity system planning.

“Like many high-growth communities, Oakville is experiencing ongoing EV adoption, and the associated demand increase to the electricity distribution system.” said Jeff Mocha, Chief Operations and Electrification Officer of Oakville Hydro. “By participating in this Ontario-wide initiative, we are taking a proactive approach to managing future electricity demand. Using AI-enabled charging coordination, we can help reduce the risk of localized grid constraints, support system reliability, and ensure we continue delivering safe, reliable service for our customers.”

Participating EV drivers can connect their vehicles through BluWave-ai’s EV Everywhere platform, which is designed to help customers charge during lower-cost periods, gain insights into their energy use, and contribute to a more flexible and connected electricity system. 

The platform currently supports a wide range of vehicle manufacturers, including Tesla, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, Mini, and Porsche. 

The project reflects a continued commitment to innovation and proactive planning as energy needs evolve.
