Waasigan Transmission Line Project EPC Awarded to Valard Construction

May 29, 2024

Valard Construction, a Quanta Services company, has been selected by Hydro One Networks Inc. to design, build and deliver on the construction of the Waasigan Transmission Line in northwestern Ontario. Pending an Environmental Assessment (EA), selection of a final route, and required regulatory approvals, the project includes approximately 190km of new double-circuit 230 kV transmission line between Thunder Bay and Atikokan and 170km of new single-circuit 230 kV transmission line between Atikokan and Dryden.

Since March 2021, Valard has been engaged in Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) activities to help Hydro One develop the project including routing and siting, preliminary design/engineering, and cost estimating work. Valard was awarded the full EPC scope for the project. Initially, work on the double-circuit portion of the project will advance, with the single-circuit portion proceeding soon afterward to meet the timelines from Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (“IESO”). Between now and the anticipated start of construction in the second quarter of 2024, Valard will continue discussions with local Indigenous communities to maximize participation in the project, finalize the engineering design, procure materials, and secure required subcontractor resources.

“We are excited to continue this work in the region, working closely with Indigenous communities, local businesses, and Hydro One. Together we will strengthen the local economy and build the necessary infrastructure to benefit all of northwestern Ontario,” said Valard via press release.
