SaskEnergy Launches $50 million System Expansion Project to Meet Increased Natural Gas Demand
October 8, 2024
SaskEnergy is investing nearly $50 million in a system expansion project to meet the current and future energy needs of eastern Saskatchewan.
Construction is now underway on The Regina East Expansion Project, which will increase natural gas capacity for residential, commercial and industrial growth in the Yorkton and Regina areas.
“Saskatchewan’s growing population and booming economy need safe, reliable and affordable natural gas to heat our homes and fuel our industries,” said Greg Ottenbreit, MLA for Yorkton. “SaskEnergy’s investments in expanding natural gas capacity to the Yorkton area will support regional economic growth and keep our community strong and vibrant.”
“SaskEnergy must continuously monitor the capacity of our system to handle the province’s current and future demand. We are always looking at where we might need to expand or upgrade infrastructure to accommodate growth across the province,” said Mark Guillet, SaskEnergy’s President and CEO. “This project is essential in maintaining the reliability our customers expect from our system and to meeting their energy needs.”
The project includes 11 kilometres of new gas lines and a new compressor site southeast of Regina that will add 14,000 GJ/day of capacity in the Yorkton area, while reinforcing the system reliability in the Regina area. The project is expected to be completed by late 2025.
“The rapid growth we’re experiencing in Yorkton has spurred the much-needed increase in commercial energy demands, which naturally spurs residential gas requirements as well. I congratulate SaskEnergy for having the vision to be one step ahead to prepare for the future of not only Yorkton, but our province of opportunity,” Mayor of Yorkton Mitch Hippsley said. “Through the Regina East Expansion Project, SaskEnergy is offering a reliable and versatile solution to fuel our city’s much needed ongoing development.”
Since 2009, SaskEnergy’s annual delivery volumes within Saskatchewan have nearly doubled, largely due to industrial customer growth. In 2024-25, SaskEnergy plans to invest $300 million in capital projects to support system reliability and safety as well as growing customer demand.
