SaskPower File Application for Permits to Contruct 230 KV of International Power Lines

June 11, 2025
SaskPower have filed an application with the Canada Energy Regulator under the Canadian Energy Regulator Act for two permits to construct and operate two 230 kilovolts international power lines.
The proposed routes for the power lines are each approximately 6 km in length, from the Tableland Switching Station, located approximately 15 km southwest of Estevan, Saskatchewan, to points on the international border between Saskatchewan and North Dakota, United States.
Progress So Far…
- Initial consultation on international power lines — complete
- Follow-up consultation on international power lines — ongoing
- Regulatory requirements — ongoing
- Received approval from Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment to proceed with the project in March 2025
- SaskPower submitted their application to the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) on May 9, 2025. Stakeholders have until July 5, 2025 to submit their feedback.
- Construction complete/power-up — by 2027
SaskPower signed a 20-year agreement with the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) in 2022. The agreement will allow them to receive up to 650 megawatts (MW) of power from our neighbours in the United States (US). The agreement starts in 2027. In the future we can also look at sending power back to our neighbours.
New power facilities will be required to support this project on both sides of the boarder. SPP selected Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) to complete the work on the US side of the border. SaskPower co-ordinate with BEPC to create a connection point at the Canada/US border. SaskPower oversee the work on the Canadian side of the border.
