Oshawa Power is thrilled to announce that 2024 marked its best reliability on record, underscoring its commitment to delivering a safe and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses across Oshawa. With a near-perfect reliability score of 99.99%, Oshawa Power customers experienced 83% less downtime than the average Ontario household.

- Average Downtime: Customers experienced an average of just 19 minutes of downtime throughout the year—asignificant improvement over Ontario’s provincial average in recent years.
- Outage Frequency: Most homes and businesses experienced zero outages in 2024, with an average of just 0.28outages per customer.
- Outage Response Time: Crews responded to outages in an average of 34 minutes, ensuring prompt restorationwhen issues arose.
Proactive Investments Paying Off
Oshawa Power’s strategic investments in grid modernization have paid significant dividends. Approximately 40% of Oshawa’s grid is now integrated into our SmartGrid, enabling automated responses to outages and faster restoration. Additionally, initiatives like replacing aging infrastructure and mitigating animal and tree-related outages have further strengthened the grid’s resilience.
In 2024, the utility responded to 413 outages, including both planned and unplanned events. Of these, 88 were momentary outages, demonstrating the effectiveness of our grid automation that allows us to isolate outages and minimize the number of customers experiencing a sustained disruption. The top cause of outages—foreign interference, including incidents like wildlife contact and motor vehicle accidents—accounted for 32% of cases.
A Record Year in Context
To put 2024’s performance in perspective, the Ontario average for outage minutes per customer has been over 100 minutes in recent years. Oshawa Power’s average of just 19 minutes highlights the local utility’s ability to deliver reliability that exceeds provincial norms.
