As we continue to foster economic growth and build Canada’s clean economy, significant investments and progress are being made in the production, distribution, and use of clean fuels, including low-carbon hydrogen. These advancements are guided by Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy, which introduced a framework in 2020 to help position Canada as a global supplier and producer of low-carbon hydrogen on the path to net-zero by 2050. Recently, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, launched the Hydrogen Strategy for Canada: Progress Report.
The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is issuing an important reminder to Ontarians following a 50 per cent increase in powerline-related fatalities in the province. This Powerline Safety Week (May 13 to 19), the ESA is sharing crucial tips to stay safe around powerlines, both at home and at work. According to the latest Ontario Electrical Safety Report, between 2018-2022, there were 12 fatalities due to powerline contact – a 50 per cent increase from 2013-2017. In the past 10 years, there have been nearly 1,400 powerline contacts and 45 per cent of all electrical-related fatalities in the province were from powerline contact.

These papers are offered to prompt discussion on better ways for Ontario to meet its growing electricity demand at a lower cost, with lower carbon emissions and in a more reliable, affordable and timely manner. Ontario’s Powering Ontario’s Growth (POG) report laid out a pathway to ensure Ontario has the energy needed to power economic growth and electrification over the next three decades while maintaining its clean electricity advantage. The IESO’s Annual Planning Outlook (AOP) is not addressing this objective.

The Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) wishes to congratulate seven member companies who have been selected by Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) as part of the procurement of 1,784 MW of energy storage announced recently. “CanREA applauds the strong outcomes of the IESO’s LT1 procurement,” said Leonard Kula, CanREA’s Vice-President of Policy for Eastern Canada and Utility Affairs. “Ontario ratepayers will benefit from the reliability that these additional energy supply resources provide, especially as the Pickering nuclear station is removed from service mid-decade.”

Through the Decarbonization Incentive Program, the Government of Canada returns a portion of the proceeds collected from the federal pollution price on large industrial emitters to support clean technology projects. This funding will enable eligible facilities to achieve greater energy efficiency, adopt sustainable solutions, and reduce their emissions to help build a low‑carbon world.
