SaskPower Brings Regina Battery Energy Storage System Online

SaskPower has announced its first-ever utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) is officially online.

Earlier this month, SaskPower announced the project’s completion at the Fleet Street site in Regina. The Honourable Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskPower, along with Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President and CEO, joined members of the BESS project team to celebrate this milestone.

Facts about the Regina Battery Energy Storage System

• This is the province’s first ever utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS)
• It supports their goal to reduce emissions and allows us to store energy from intermittent resources, like wind and solar. It also helps deliver power to the power grid when needed.

The system:

• This project will help SaskPower understand the potential for battery energy storage in Saskatchewan.
• The system’s components are connected by many cables measuring a combined total of 63 kilometres. That’s almost the distance from Regina to Moose Jaw!
• provides added flexibility to the power system. It can help balance load when demand spikes for short periods of time.
• can provide 20 MW of power, which is equal to what’s needed to power 20,000 homes for up to an hour.
• consists of 12 battery containers on a site that’s about the size of a football field.
