AUC Amendments to Rule 024: Rules Respecting Micro-Generation and Associated Documents
MArch 10, 2026
Amendments to Rule 024: Rules Respecting Micro-Generation and associated documents Rule 024: Rules Respecting Micro Generation sets out the requirements that must be met before constructing and interconnecting a micro-generation unit to the distribution grid. It also sets out a process for disputes between micro-generation customers and the applicable owner regarding the costs to connect to the grid. The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) has amended the following
documents in Rule 024:
- Rule 024: Rules Respecting Micro-Generation;
- Form A – Micro-generation notice;
- Form B – Notice of dispute;
- Form C – Notice of complaint; and
- The AUC’s Micro-generation notice submission guideline (This document provides specific safety, electrical and procedural aspects and a summary of the processes required to obtain approval for micro-generation connection to the grid. It also outlines obligations of micro-generation applicants, electrical contractors, energy retailers and owners, and provides information about connecting micro-generation to the electrical grid).
In making the amendments, the AUC considered feedback received through the AUC’s written consultation process that was held from May to November 2025. The AUC thanks parties for their participation in the consultation process.
The AUC received a substantial amount of feedback in relation to matters outside of the AUC’s rule-making authority and was not able to address this feedback in its amended rule. Examples of feedback that is not addressed related to the Micro-generation Regulation and government policy include: concerns about long application processing and site commissioning timelines, changing interconnection standards, and issues around compensation and post-approval compliance. The AUC has shared this feedback with the Government of Alberta.
The amendments focus on providing examples of evidence and requirements to determine a micro-generation generating unit’s eligibility, providing administrative clarifications and encouraging industry practices that may support a more efficient process for all parties.
All major amendments are identified in the blackline documents for reference, which can be found in the consultation library on the AUC website. The final documents are posted on the AUC website and are effective April 1, 2026. For clarity, the amendments to Rule 024 will apply to all micro-generation notices, Form A, registered on or after April 1, 2026. The previous version of Rule 024 will apply to micro-generation notices filed before April 1, 2026, and related notice of disputes.
