Manitoba Hydro Managing Wildfire Aftermath

June 11, 2025
Manitoba Hydro is continuing to monitor the wildfire situations and related power outages in affected areas of the province.
The utility was able to re-energize about 900 customers along the Lee River late May 14.
Approximately 1500 customers were without power as of May 30, due to fires in northern and eastern Manitoba.
“The safety of our employees and the public remains our top priority,” said Allan Danroth, Manitoba Hydro’s President and CEO.
The Manitoba Hydro generating stations at Pointe du Bois and Slave Falls were evacuated late May 14 as planned, as wildfires threatened to cut off road access to the facilities. The facilities are in a safe state with the generating units shut down and water passing through the spillways. The loss of generating capacity will have no impact on customers.
Manitoba Hydro is monitoring the still-developing wildfire situation, the utility said on May 14th, patrolling lines by air to inspect for damage.

“We are working closely with the Manitoba Wildfire Service, the Office of the Fire Commissioner and RCMP to ensure we’re not putting any of our restoration crews or emergency response teams in unsafe situations,” Danroth said.
“We appreciate the support and patience of our customers as we wait to safely access affected areas to assess damage to our infrastructure and begin our restoration work.”

All Manitoba Hydro employees have safely left areas under evacuation orders. The Jenpeg Generating Station was safely evacuated Wednesday (May 14). The facility was undergoing maintenance and not generating electricity at the time, and the evacuation will have no effect on customers.
In eastern Manitoba, Nopiming Provincial Park remains evacuated, and Manitoba Hydro crews have paused restoration work and left the area until it is safe to return.
“I want to acknowledge our staff and customers who live and work in communities affected by fires and evacuations,” said Danroth. “Our thoughts are with them, and we are very mindful of the challenges they’re facing. I also want to thank the firefighter and other first responders who are doing their best to protect Manitobans at this time of crisis.”
