SaskPower has signed an agreement with First Nations Power Authority (FNPA) to find a proponent to develop, own and operate a 100 megawatts (MW) solar generation facility to be located in south-central Saskatchewan. SaskPower will buy the power generated from this facility through a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. “This agreement is an example of the Government of Saskatchewan and SaskPower’s commitment to economic reconciliation,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskPower. “The strong participation requirement will ensure more opportunity for Indigenous-owned companies to participate in power generation in the province.”
The Ontario government is expanding and refurbishing clean electricity generation by announcing support for Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) approximately $1 billion investment to refurbish eight hydroelectric generating stations in Eastern Ontario. This infrastructure program would secure 1,617 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity generation, equivalent to powering 1.6 million homes, helping to meet increasing demand from electrification and fueling the province’s growth. “Hydroelectric generating stations in Eastern Ontario have been providing the province with clean electricity for a century, and with today’s investment, we’re extending the life of these eight stations for decades more to help Ontario meet its growing electricity needs,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification.

BC Hydro will construct more than $1.25 billion in capital projects throughout Burnaby over the next decade to upgrade and expand the electricity grid, and provide clean power for homes and businesses in growing communities. “We must build out B.C.’s electrical system like never before, to power our homes and businesses, to power a growing economy and to power our future,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “In Burnaby and communities across B.C., these construction projects will create thousands of good jobs over the next decade and ensure that people have access to clean, affordable and reliable electricity – when they need it and where they need it.”
Hermanville Wind Farm was not operating at its peak ability due to turbine issues. In 2023, there were major repairs to turbines T1, T2, T3, T5 and T7. Repairs have resulted in better energy generation. The repairs will extend the life of existing shafts and improve the reliability of new ones. April 2024 was the best energy producing month in more than two years at over 6,000 MWh produced from eight turbines, with four of those turbines running above 97% availability.
The Ontario Government announced the completion of the first phase of site preparation for Ontario’s first Small Modular Reactor (SMR), the first in the G7, being built at Darlington. In addition, the government announced the successful completion of trade missions to Romania and France, securing significant deals totalling $360 million that will support Ontario’s economy and workforce. Papillons Infrastructure Nature and Earth Day Canada announce the implementation of a preferential night rate on its EcoCharge IGA fast-charging network for electric vehicles, a first in the country. Starting June 17, 2024, electric vehicle users will benefit from a discount of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from 9:00 PM to 5:59 AM when charging their vehicle. This night rate will take effect alongside a shift from an hourly rate to a kWh rate, reflecting actual electricity consumption and ensuring users pay the fair price for what they consume. The rate will be set at $0.49 per kWh during the day and $0.39 per kWh at night, compared to the current rate of $22 per hour.
