Ontario is accelerating the timely and cost-effective development of three transmission projects that will support the production of clean steel at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as economic growth, critical mineral development and new housing in northeast and eastern Ontario. “We’re building a made-in-Ontario supply chain that’s connecting the province’s critical minerals and clean steel in the north, to auto makers and battery manufacturers across Ontario,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy.
Kinectrics is pleased to announce that it has secured funding from the IESO Hydrogen Innovation Fund to perform a hydrogen feasibility study. This fund seeks to establish action-oriented, sector-specific pilot projects with the purpose of evaluating and demonstrating how low-carbon hydrogen technologies can be integrated to strengthen and improve the reliability of Ontario’s energy grid.
Recently, SaskTel announced it will launch SaskTel infiNET service in Indian Head, Maple Creek, and Rosetown as a result of the Crown corporation’s $200 million Rural Fibre Initiative. Delivering blazing fast internet speeds, SaskTel’s infiNET service allows customers to access the latest digital tools and technologies to socialize, learn, pursue economic opportunities, connect to healthcare and other government services. SaskTel anticipates select areas in all three communities will be fibre-ready by mid-November.
Wataynikaneyap Power is pleased to announce the energization of Wunnumin Lake First Nation. The northern Ontario community was energized on May 25, 2023, and connected to the provincial power grid on September 21, 2023. “This is a great achievement that will be felt in the community for generations to come,” Wunnumin Lake Chief Sam Mamakwa remarks. “Now that our load capacity is no longer restricted from diesel generators, Wunnumin Lake has been able to connect our new John George Martin Memorial School, which has space for students from junior kindergarten to Grade 10.”
Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro (NOTL Hydro) is now offering Green Button access to its customer data. Green Button is a standard which allows customers to access their data in a consistent manner across all locations and utilities (gas and electric) in Ontario. With a simple and secure process, customers will be able to securely download (access) or connect (share) their energy usage data in an industry-standard format with registered third parties. As such, this tool will be particularly useful for customers with multiple locations.
Hydro-Québec inaugurates the Romaine complex, its largest hydroelectric complex since Baie-James. Its four generating stations have now all been commissioned. The complex has an installed capacity of 1,550 MW and annual energy output of 8 TWh—enough to supply 470,000 households. Its energy is clean, renewable and available on demand, and contributes directly to Québec’s prosperity and decarbonization.
Kitchener South-Hespeler MPP Jess Dixon recently joined Energy Minister Todd Smith, Enova Power Corp. and GrandBridge Energy to launch the Green Button standard that will allow local families and businesses to access their energy data and work with Green Button applications to track and control their energy use and save money on their monthly bills.

Wataynikaneyap Power is pleased to announce the energization of Wawakapewin First Nation. The northern Ontario community was connected to the provincial power grid on August 16, 2023. Upon grid connection, the community turned off the diesel generators which had previously provided them primary power. Wawakapewin Chief Anne Marie Beardy states, “This is a big day for our little community. Lack of reliable power meant not being able to grow.”
EVLO Energy Storage Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the 2023 Landmark Application of Energy Storage Award from Energy Storage Canada. EVLO was chosen for its ground-breaking and innovative application of energy storage technology in Parent, Quebec. In Parent, a transmission line supplies power to the town’s residents. When critical upgrades to the transmission system were required, EVLO deployed a 4-MW/20-MWh BESS to supply Hydro-Québec’s residential and business customers.
Recently, Hydro One announced it is expanding its myEnergy Rewards program to help more customers save money by reducing their electricity use during periods of high energy demand. The program currently rewards Hydro One customers who own a smart thermostat with financial incentives for reducing their energy use during the summer months. Customers can now enroll their other smart home devices including electric vehicles and chargers.
